Voice Language Setting — English vs. Multilingual

What Is the Voice Language Setting?

The Voice Language setting controls which languages your AI receptionist can recognize and speak. You can choose between two modes:

  • English (default) — Optimized for English-only calls

  • Multilingual — Supports English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, Italian, and Dutch

Where to Find It

Mobile App

  1. Open Receptionist Settings

  2. Find the Voice Language option right on the settings page

Web Dashboard (app.skipcalls.com)

  1. Go to your Receptionist page

  2. Open the Settings tab

  3. Find the Voice Language option

Which Mode Should I Choose?

English (Recommended for most users)

If your callers speak English, stick with English mode. It delivers the lowest error rate and the most accurate speech recognition. The AI is tuned specifically for English, so it handles accents, background noise, and fast speech more reliably.

Choose English if:

  • Your business operates in English only

  • Your callers occasionally have accents but still speak English

  • You want the most accurate call handling possible

Multilingual

If your business regularly receives calls in other languages, Multilingual mode lets your receptionist detect and respond in the caller's language automatically. Supported languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, Italian, and Dutch.

Choose Multilingual if:

  • You serve a bilingual or multilingual community

  • Callers frequently speak Spanish, French, or another supported language

  • You'd rather support more languages even if it means slightly less accuracy

Troubleshooting Common Issues

"My receptionist misunderstands callers with accents"

If your receptionist is set to Multilingual and callers speak English with a strong accent, the AI might accidentally detect the wrong language. For example, a caller with a heavy accent saying "I need an appointment" might be misheard as another language entirely.

Fix: Switch to English mode. This tells the AI to always interpret speech as English, which dramatically improves accuracy for accented English.

"My receptionist responds in the wrong language"

This typically happens in Multilingual mode when the AI misdetects the caller's language based on the first few words. A greeting or pause can sometimes be misinterpreted.

Fix: If your callers are English speakers, switch to English mode. If you genuinely need multilingual support, keep the setting but be aware this can occasionally happen.

"Callers speak Spanish but my receptionist only replies in English"

Your receptionist is likely set to English mode, which only recognizes English.

Fix: Switch to Multilingual mode so the AI can detect and respond in Spanish (and other supported languages).

"Speech recognition seems less accurate after switching to Multilingual"

This is expected. When the AI listens for 10+ languages simultaneously, it has more room for confusion compared to focusing on just one. If you don't need multilingual support, switching back to English will restore the higher accuracy.
